Temporary Traffic Impacts on Plum Island Turnpike

Beginning Friday, April 19, roadway traffic on the Plum Island Turnpike will be shifted right.

NEWBURY – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing it will begin installing a temporary traffic control plan to reduce the speed limit and shift traffic to the right on the Plum Island Turnpike eastbound and westbound. The traffic control plan will be implemented on Friday, April 19, and is expected to remain in place until later this summer.

The work may require an alternating traffic pattern for short durations to allow for the application of new traffic markings.  One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times.

The drawbridge carrying the Plum Island Turnpike over the Plum Island River is currently undergoing repairs as part of an ongoing $7.7 million district-wide drawbridge operations and repair contract.  The traffic impacts are necessary to allow repairs to be undertaken to restore the bridge to full capacity.

In early March, MassDOT announced the drawbridge would be unavailable to open for marine vessels through August 5, 2024, to allow for structural repairs to be completed. Additional repairs were completed earlier this week to address an issue affecting the road surface.

Appropriate signage, law enforcement details, and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work area.

Drivers traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.

All scheduled work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.
