On March 30, 2022, Newbury Conservation Agent Samantha Holt successfully completed the final course required to obtain a Certificate of Achievement for the Fundamentals for Conservation Commissioners certificate training program through the Massachusetts Association for Conservation Commissions (MACC). This program provides conservation commissioners, staff members, and others with the basic knowledge and practical tools to carry out many responsibilities of administering the MA Wetlands Protection Act (WPA), and for open space planning and protection. To earn this Certificate, participants are required to complete five core unit classes and three elective unit classes (there are eight to choose from).

Samantha has completed classes covering topics such as the role of conservation commissions, WPA fundamentals, plan review and site visit procedures, wetland functions and values, effective permit writing, protecting wildlife habitat, effective erosion and sediment control, and buffer zone science and regulation. These classes helped to build on her existing knowledge of wetlands protection, permitting, and management, and provided her with new and expanded skill sets that will help her better serve the Newbury community as the Conservation Agent and Floodplain Administrator. Samantha plans to continue participating in MACC Fundamentals courses as they become available, as well as participating in other courses, workshops, and informational sessions provided by MACC and the many other organizations and agencies that provide them. She looks forward to continuing her professional development, and expanding her knowledge and understanding of Massachusetts wetlands, so that she can provide the best service possible to the Town of Newbury, its residents, and its many valuable environmental resources.
