Agricultural Commission

Mission:

Preserving Newbury’s Land for the Next Generation of Farmers

In conjunction with the desires of the majority of the people who participated in forming the Master Plan for Newbury, it is the mission of the Agricultural Commission to support, enhance, and foster the economic success of the farmers in this town to encourage their continued productivity; thus, supporting the character and feel of the town expressly detailed as a top priority by the people who choose to live here. Some of these activities include: overseeing the mandatory disclosure of the Newbury Right to Farm By-Law to potential home buyers and renters; studying and actively opposing any development or restructuring of the town which would negatively impact the available farm lands and farming income to existing and future farms; working to preserve the current and future lands dedicated to farming; educating the population of Newbury to traditional and acceptable methods of producing and maintaining sustainable farming; and being a liaison between local boards and the general public for farming related issues.

Our goal is to show that progress does not have to be at the expense of the one resource that sets Newbury apart from surrounding towns whose farm lands have been usurped by developments, recreational fields and well-intentioned but short-sighted plans. We are united in preserving and protecting the local farmers who provide us with fresh, local food as well as the beautiful fields, meadows, and viewscapes which can never be recreated once lost.

This mission statement is to be considered a work in progress and maybe changed or amended by the members of the Agricultural Commission as the farming needs of the town change.
