Newbury Open Space Locations
Newbury offers many opportunities to take advantage of open space in whether on walking trails through the woods, along of the many rivers or seashore.
The trails listed below offer a variety of terrain, ranging from an easy stroll to more active hiking.
This map provides locations for open space opportunities throughout Newbury. A brief description, website information, and address is provided for each location.
A. The Bay Circuit Trail
A running trail throughout Newbury. Off road sections are primarily at Old Town Hill, Newman Rd/Hay St area.
B. Central St. Playing Fields
Located on Central St, just east of the Parker River, the Central St. Playing Fields are home to many town youth sporting events. No dogs are allowed on playing field area. Large parking area and trails below fields.
C. Coffin's Island
Small island on the edge of the Common Pasture. Half mile trail. Good birding. Parking on street off Scotland Rd, east of State Police Facility.
D. Crane Pond WMA **
Extensive trail system spanning four towns. Parking within Newbury located off Forest St. in Byfield. Many trails are flooded and provide better access in the winter. Area open to hunting.
E. Great Meadow Farm
Open field and woodland by Parker River. Limited parking in lot. Located off Orchard St., 1/2 mile from Central St; look for sign marking Great Meadow Farm.
F. Martin Burns WMA **
Large woodland area good for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. Around 3 mile Gravel loop road and side trails. Off Orchard St., 1+ mile from Central St. Area open to hunting.
G. Parker River NWR
Internationally known wildlife refuge, great for hiking, wildlife observation and photography, fishing (state fishing license required), paddling, and biking. Multiple parking areas with paid pass which can be purchased online or in person using cash or check. Most Beach access closed April 1 to early August to protect nesting birds.
H. Plum Island Beach
Barrier beach great for a day at the beach, walking, and boating. Town beach parking with permit. Off-season provides best access. No dogs on beach during the summer.
I. Old Town Hill
Large walking area with several miles of trails both steep and gentle inclines. Provides views of the town and surrounding marsh. Off road parking located on Newman Rd, Hay St, and Boston Rd.
J. Spencer-Pierce-Little Farm
Farm with unique historic house and short trails. Some parking on Little's Lane, off High Rd., south of Newbury Upper Green.
K. William Foward WMA **
Geared towards a natural landscape rather than maintained trails. This area is great for bird-watching, hunting, fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Located off Boston Rd., about half a mile from Route 1. Limited Parking.
L. Caldwell Farm Trail (Loop)
Located off of Elm Street by Caldwell Farm Road in Newbury, this new trail provides members of the public an additional opportunity to get outside and enjoy the sights of bucolic Newbury. The trail loop is approximately one (1) mile and wraps around the Caldwell Farm property. Parking at the trail site is limited to the parking area.
** These areas are managed by the State for hunting. Caution is advised during hunting season - wear orange clothing, control dogs. More information on hunting in Massachusetts.
